The idea for the Ridge Vase came while traveling through different cities with a vase in mind, searching for details that had an architectural feel. Upon returning to our studio in Finland, we began sketching by hand and making mock-ups in paper and ceramics. With its vertical lines and unique shape, inspired by a doorway in Paris, the Ridge Vase presents a new way to place flowers through a modern expression along with a sculptural character when not in use. The Ridge Vase manipulates the oval form through its refined dent while adding the function of a small handle to use when moving the vase from one room to another.

The Ridge Vase presents a new way to display flowers through its sculptural expression along with an artful character when not in use. The design features added functionality through its refined dent, allowing flowers to stand upright while also working as a subtle handle when moving the vase from one room to another.

Studio Kaksikko is a Helsinki-based design studio that specialises in ceramic tableware and wooden furniture, founded Salla Luhtasela and Wesley Walters. The duo shares an interest in functional, understated forms that highlight each material’s tactile qualities, as well as in the production process itself. They met while studying at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and have collaborated on a broad range of professional projects under the studio name Kaksikko.

Specifications

The Ridge Vase is available in two colours:

• Off-White

• Terracotta.

The Ridge Vase is created with liquid earthenware clay poured into a plaster mould. The Ridge Vase is then polished with a wet sponge and fired at 1000°. After firing, the design is sprayed with water internally and sprayed externally with a water-based solution that in the Off-White vase contains the colour mixture. Lastly, the vase is then taken to the kiln again, this time at 1100°.
