Connections Dining Chair
by Rolf Barfoed.
Designed and made in Canberra, the Connections Dining Table and Chairs embody Rolf’s appreciation for rare timber, woodworking for commerce, functional design, and his team’s exceptional skills.
Rolf discusses the creation of the Connections suite:
“Connections Dining Suite is ‘built-up’ with short and narrow strips of Black Bean timber that we saved from our firewood bin while recently making a very large commission. The recent commission required long and wide boards that left us with stacks of smaller pieces. The rarity of Black Bean, the desirable chocolate-brown colour, and the prevalence of figure, made the small pieces of timber too precious to burn. I’m pleased with the aesthetic of the numerous laminated timbers in the tabletop. This method of construction is known traditionally to be very stable compared to higher shrinkage and expansion when using wider boards.
For the chairs, we were able to make use of skinny strips of timber for the straight legs, and short lengths of timber for the seats and rails. The available timber played a key role in the design of Connections Dining Suite.
The one exception against using short and skinny timber was for the chair backrests. We used a single long length of fresh timber for the backrests in all six chairs. The matching backrests around the perimeter of the table make an impact. Note the beautiful, mirrored patterns in each chair’s backrest.
The 150 cm diameter dining table is supported by three legs. David MacLaren inspired this arrangement in a conversation we had about practicality. Two chairs fit in between each table leg, making it suitable for six chairs.
The table legs are recessed into the tabletop primarily to create a beautiful intersection between the legs and the quarter radius profile of the tabletop. This detail is carried into the chairs in the joints connecting the back legs and backrest. It is the leitmotif for Connections Dining Suite.
The chairs were designed to express a cabinetmaker’s advanced skill set. The makers require the ability to set up and use a spindle moulder, wood lathe, and stroke sander, among our other more standard tools”.
The Connections Dining Suite was designed by Rolf Barfoed and crafted by Samuel Ryrie and Charlie Elms in April 2024.
